A Brief History of Woodlawn
Woodlawn, a community of over 200 homes, is considered by many realtors to be one of the most prestigious addresses in the Fredericksburg area. Its history is as varied and interesting as its inhabitants.
The property, now occupied by the subdivision, was owned by the Harder family. Mr. Harder, a superintendent for the FMC Corporation (the cellophane plant formerly located on Tidewater Trail), lived in the house at 202 Deacon Road. The only other house on the property was a "tenant" house at 5 Bridlepath Lane.
In 1970 Mr. Harder sold a substantial amount of the land to Gerald "Ducky" Sullivan, who began the process of subdividing it, building roads, adding infrastructure (water and sewer lines), and selling some of the lots. In addition, Ducky built a large number of the homes himself.
Ducky and his family lived on the farm at 30 Steeplechase Road. There are lots of stories about the cows and horses residing in the neighborhood. The final section of Woodlawn was not built out until 1988 and 1989.
The Woodlawn Association has as its goal the perpetuation of community as an integral part of our identity. Please contact a member of the
Woodlawn Association Board to volunteer your time or talent to help us be the best we can be.
